Søndag den 11. november 1855 døde forfatteren og filosoffen Søren Kierkegaard. Han blev 42 år og døde efter at have været syg i knap otte uger. Han døde på Frederiks Hospital i København. I bogen er der en kort omtale af Søren Kierkegaards værk og religiøse grundsyn, af Frederiks Hospital, af de læger der behandlede ham, samt – noget ingen tidligere har gjort – en tekstnær tolkning, fortolkning og kommentering af hans sygejournal. Ud fra arbejdet med sygejournalen klargøres det hvilke sygdomme det må afvises han led af, og der gives et sandsynligt bud på, hvad han døde af.

The author and philosopher Søren Kierkegaard died on the 11 th of November 1855. He was 42 years old and died after having been ill for almost eight weeks. He died at Frederiks Hospital in Copenhagen. In the book there is a short mention of Søren Kierkegaard’s work and fundamental view of religion, of Frederiks Hospital, of the doctors who treated him and – something never done before – a textual criticism, interpretation and commentary on his case-book. From the research on the case-book it is explained which illnesses he definitely did not suffer from, and a suggestion is made about the probable cause of his death.

Jens Staubrand, who is a philosopher, has dramatized Søren Kierkegaard and Regine Olsen’s love-story and produced and directed readings with musical accompaniment of Søren Kierkegaard’s The Seducer’s Diary in Denmark and a number of European countries. He has written about Kierkegaard and opera, edited texts for a number of Søren Kierkegaard musical works, has produced the CDs Søren Kierkegaard Set to Music, The Seducer’s Diary with music by Sofia Gubaidulina, as well as The Seducer’s Diary with music by Mozart in Greek. Furthermore he has published, apart from Søren Kirkegaard’s Illness and Death, the English-Danish Søren Kierkegaard International Bibliography: Music Works and Plays, New Edition as well as the Søren Kierkegaard works Johannes the Seducer’s Diary, Listen. listen, listen to Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Repetition Repetition, In vino veritas (In wine there is the truth), Søren Kierkegaard: Letters from Berlin and Søren Kierkegaard: On Drama.

Jens Staubrand, filosof, har dramatiseret Søren Kierkegaard og Regine Olsens kærlighedshistorie og produceret og instrueret musikledsagede Søren Kierkegaard oplæsningsforestillinger med Forførerens Dagbog i Danmark og i en række europæiske lande. Han har skrevet om Kierkegaard og opera, redigeret tekster til en række Søren Kierkegaard-musikværker, har produceret Cd’erne Søren Kierkegaard Set to Music, Forførerens Dagbog med musik af Sofia Gubaidulina, samt den græsksprogede Forførerens Dagbog med musik af Mozart. Endvidere har han, udover Søren Kierkegaard’s Illness and Death, udgivet den engelsk-danske Søren Kierkegaard International Bibliography: Music Works and Plays samt Søren Kierkegaard- værkerne Johannes Forførerens Dagbog, Hør, hør, hør Mozarts Don Juan, Gentagelsen Gentagelsen, I vinen er sandhed, Søren Kierkegaard: Breve fra Berlin og Søren Kierkegaard: Om Drama.
